If the output of a linear regulator is shorted to ground, why is the short-circuit current larger than the value listed in the datasheet?
- Product variations and temperature characteristics are factors, but in the case of a linear regulator with foldback type overcurrent protection, if the contact resistance when the output is shorted to ground is large, the output voltage will rise due to the product of the short-circuit current and contact resistance, resulting in a current larger than the current during a complete short-circuit.
