New Power Management IC Optimized for Intel's Next-Generation Apollo Lake Chip Architecture
Contributes to smaller, thinner, lower power designs for cloudbooks and 2-in-1 tablets
Kyoto and Santa Clara, Calif., – October 18, 2016 – ROHM has recently announced the availability of a power management IC (PMIC) developed for the latest announced Intel® processor (code named Apollo Lake) designed for 2-in-1 tablets and cloud books where reduced power consumption and a thinner, smaller form factor are increasingly demanded.
The BD2670MWV provides all power supplies required by Apollo Lake platforms while contributing to lower power consumption. It is offered in an ultra-compact UQFN68AV8080 package (8.0x8.0mm, t=1.0mm) that reduces the number of components by 38% and mounting area by 33% over conventional discrete configurations. In addition, a Power Control Logic function is built in that makes it possible to control and analyze the internal PMIC conditions and access the register through an I2C interface, contributing to safer designs.
To date, ROHM has supplied a wide variety of PMICs for a range of applications utilizing industry-leading analog design technology. In addition, ROHM has established 11 design centers all over the world to provide superior customer support, and going forward ROHM will continue to leverage proprietary technologies and expertise to develop high-performance products and solutions that contribute to greater energy savings and safety.

1. All power supplies required by Intel's Apollo Lake architecture integrated into an ultra-compact monolithic form factor
In addition to market-leading analog design technology, ROHM leverages expertise in supplying PMICs optimized for previous Intel® processors to develop an ultra-compact monolithic PMIC that incorporates all power supplies required for Intel's latest architecture platform, Apollo Lake. In addition, the highly integrated design requires 38% fewer components than conventional discrete solutions, decreasing mounting area by 33%. A power supply sequencer optimized for the Apollo Lake platform is also built in that reduces design load considerably.
2. Built-in Power Control Logic function enables analysis and control of the internal PMIC
In order to prevent CPU malfunction a logic circuit is required to detect abnormalities and store information in the register when the voltage output from the PMIC becomes irregular. ROHM's newest ultra-compact (8mmx8mm) PMIC includes a Power Control Logic circuit that monitors and controls internal PMIC operation and can access the register via I2C interface, ensuring stable voltage supply.
