The BD14000EFV-C self-contained cell balancer IC utilizes a shunt-type supercap balancing method and supports 4-6 cells connected in series. All functions required for cell balancing operation are integrated into a single chip - an industry first* - reducing design load significantly.

Simple modular design
Achieving cell balancing operation typically requires a large number of discrete parts, making it difficult to reduce mounting area and design load while maintaining reliability. To meet these challenges, ROHM developed a supercap cell balancer IC that integrates multiple protection circuits along with all required cell balancing functions into a compact form factor, contributing to greater miniaturization and providing superior reliability.
EDLC Module Miniaturization
The breakthrough design integrates all supercap cell balancing operation (normally requiring more than 20 discrete components) on a single chip, reducing mounting area by 38% over conventional solutions.
The detection voltage can be varied to cover cell balancing voltages between 2.4 and 3.4V (0.1V increments).
And to accommodate the higher voltages generated through the use of additional supercaps, users can connect multiple ICs in series to expand cell balancing functionality.
In addition to integrating safety features such as 2-stage overvoltage detection and self-diagnostics functions that ensure worry-free operation, the BD14000EFV-C is AEC-Q100 qualified, making it suitable for automotive applications that demand greater reliability.
What is EDLC (or supercaps)?
EDLC (short for Electric Double Layer Capacitor), or supercap, is a type of storage device that provides higher output density than secondary batteries such as li-ion (but less energy density). Additional advantages include reduced degradation against repeated charging/discharging (resulting in longer life), no failures even during external shorts (providing greater safety), and eco-friendly construction featuring no heavy metals.
Conventionally, small-capacitance devices are primarily used for backup or stabilization in power supplies. However, recent years have seen increased adoption of larger capacitance (>300F) products capable of rapid charging/discharging optimized for auxiliary power supplies and energy regeneration in automotive and industrial systems.
