Kyoto City has recently announced preparations for the reopening of ROHM Theatre Kyoto

On Sept. 11, 2014 (Thursday) it was announced that pre-opening and opening activities and operations will be carried out for a period of one year after the opening of ROHM Theatre Kyoto. (Click here for business activities)

A study of business operations for the first year of ROHM Theatre Kyoto, which is currently undergoing renovations and scheduled to open on January 10, 2016, is being conducted by the Opening Business Steering Committee, chaired by Seiji Ozawa. A variety of performances, including Noh, opera, ballet, concerts, and theater, will be held with the support of both ROHM and the ROHM Music Foundation.

In a statement, Seiji Ozawa expressed high hopes that even in this age of the TV and internet ROHM Theatre Kyoto will attract large numbers of visitors.

Please come and experience a variety of performances during the opening year of ROHM Theatre Kyoto in 2016.

New ROHM Theatre Kyoto logo type.

Under a contract with the city of Kyoto, ROHM has acquired the naming rights to the recently renovated Kyoto Kaikan for the next 50 years, which will be renamed ROHM Theatre Kyoto. In addition, the logo type for ROHM Theatre Kyoto will be decided in consultation with Kyoto officials, and announced once a decision has been made.

Beginning in April 2014, this new logo type will be used until the naming rights agreement expires in 50 years.

Kyoto Kaikan has been a cultural institution for over 50 years and is treasured by the citizens of Kyoto. ROHM, which is headquartered in Kyoto, would like to continue to make meaningful contributions to society by taking advantage of ROHM Theatre Kyoto's legacy as a beloved icon, hosting and showcasing cultural activities and performances that represent the rich cultural history of Kyoto and Japan in a variety of fields, including music, Theatre, and traditional arts.

ROHM Theatre Kyoto Ground Breaking Ceremony.

On September 23, 2013 the ground breaking ceremony for ROHM Theatre Kyoto was held at ROHM Theatre Kyoto Park Plaza (formerly the Conference Hall).

The ground breaking ceremony began with an address from Mayor Daisaku Kadokawa, in which he provided an overview of the redevelopment project, then segued into congratulatory messages from distinguished guests, and closed with hopes and well-wishes for safe and expedient construction, for the expected opening date of January 2016.

Established the ROHM Theatre Kyoto Opening Project Review Committee.
Appointed Mr. Seiji Ozawa as the chairman.

ROHM Theatre Kyoto will open in January 2016 and will host opening projects for a period of one year. In order to evaluate these opening projects, a ROHM Theatre Kyoto Opening Project Exploratory Committee was established, with internationally renowned conductor Mr. Seiji Ozawa inaugurated as the chairman.

From the beginning, Mayor Kadokawa has expressed his desire for people to enjoy and appreciate the charm of ROHM Theatre Kyoto through the opening performance throughout the first year and explained the purpose and goals of this ambitious project.

Mr. Seiji Ozawa, the chairman, said before the committee, 'The important thing is not the opening performances and festivities (during the first year), but what happens after, that will determine whether [ROHM Theatre Kyoto] becomes cherished by the local citizens and an integral part of the community.'

The Exploratory Committee is planning to announce these news and information by the Summer of 2014, increasing awareness and anticipation for the opening in January 2016.
