ROHM Semiconductor exhibited its products at [HANNOVER MESSE 2016], to be held from April 25th (Monday) through the 29th (Friday), in the City of Hannover, Germany.
In this exhibition, the first of its kind for ROHM, under the topic of "Endless Possibilities" , the company has showcased a large number of key devices that contribute to [Industry 4.0], technological innovations encompassing virtually all industrial devices.

SiC Power Devices with Many Achievements Already
Achieved Significant Improvements in Efficiency Compared to Existing Solutions
Many visitors showed strong interest in SiC (silicon carbide) products as one solution for energy efficiency - the key theme of ROHM for the exhibition.
A Formula-E race car (replica) was displayed since ROHM's SiC Schottky barrier diodes will be incorporated for Season 3 as a technical partner. ROHM's SiC Schottky barrier diodes gave a strong impression as a practical example of a SiC semiconductor device used in a range of EVs/HEVs from general vehicles to race cars.
As for power devices, the "2nd generation SiC Schottky barrier diode SCS2 series", SiC-MOSFETs of the "2nd generation planar structure SCT2 and SCH2 series" and the "3rd generation trench structure SCT3 series" currently under development, and the more convenient "Full SiC Power Module" as the combination of these SiC discrete devices, were exhibited.
Moreover, "power supply applications for industrial machinery" using the SiC power device were exhibited.
The 5 kW LLC resonant DC/DC converter using SiC-MOSFET has been miniaturized, achieving 7x improved power density compared to conventional Si-MOSFETs. Also, a UPS inverter that has achieved miniaturization to 23x21x10 cm with 4.5 kg weight for 10 kW output by putting a full SiC module on board was exhibited.
Demonstrations were also carried out, and on the demonstration showing 10 kW 3-level motor control, it was proven that losses were reduced by 73% versus IGBT by using SiC-MOSFET.
The exhibition showed that the SiC power device is a key device for industrial machinery with large power demands,delivering dramatic energy savings and miniaturization.

Newest power device and control technology brings out its performance
Offering total power solutions
ROHM, in addition to developing cutting-edge power devices such as SiC, puts its focus on developing control devices that fully bring out the performance of the power devices, offering total solutions for power applications.
Examples of total power solutions displayed include a power supply board that uses SiC-MOSFET and a quasi-resonant AC/DC converter control IC with an optimized gate drive in order to use SiC-MOSFET as a power switch; IPM that combines a gate driver, a bootstrap diode and ROHM original low-loss high-speed Prest MOS with low loss compared to IGBT in the low current region; and solutions for high power density inverter applications comprising various DC/DC converters, SiC-MOSFETs, diodes and gate drivers.
These solutions are a result of ROHM's long experience in fusing analog power technology and power device technology, and it can be said that one approach of ROHM, the company that advances energy efficiency, was shown.

Simplifying evaluation of sensing devices, advancing development of sensor networks
ROHM is developing products and solutions for sensor networks for the Industry 4.0 / IoT market.
At the display of sensing devices, varieties of sensors and a sensor shield, a sensor platform kit to easily assess various sensors, and a development kit that incorporates four different types of sensors for motion sensing, a wireless communication module and a MCU, were showed.
Environmental monitoring carried out as a demonstration at the booth in particular drew many visitors interested in this example of a sensor network. Nine sensor nodes equipped with temperature, humidity and light sensors were installed in the booth, and wireless communications were used to display the monitoring results as a distribution on a screen.
All were examples of a sensor network intended for the Industry 4.0/IoT market, demonstrating ROHM's concrete solutions.

SiC Innovating Possibilities
Complementing the latest product offerings in industry-leading silicon carbide (SiC), we will be showcasing a broad range of high-efficiency power supply solutions which represent the fusion of ROHM's particular strength, analog power technology, and cutting-edge digital technology.
In addition, our booth will feature a replica of the car that competed in the newest motor sport, Formula-E. Also dubbed as the F1 of electric vehicles, the car marks the further evolution a machine packing the latest technology powered by the SiC rolled out by ROHM.
Formula-E in a nutshell
Formula-E is a single-seater championship sponsored by the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).
Formula-E features a series of races involving the world's first fully-electric Formula cars.
Intended to promote the wide-spread acceptance of electric cars to curb air pollution in big cities, the races are conducted on city-street courses in the metropolitan and famous resort areas of the world. Currently Season 2 of championship races is underway, with participation of 10 teams (two drivers per team).
Beginning Season 3, ROHM's SiC SBD will make its presence known in Venturi team vehicles.
