Although unipolar stepping motors have been the predominant type for many years, bipolar stepping motors have become increasingly popular in PPC devices and other applications.

In practice, conversion from unipolar to bipolar requires that a bipolar stepping motor be selected based on fundamentals of the motor drive and motor torque.
Another important consideration is the type of application. For example, for PPCs improved torque during high speed rotation, multiple protection functions, stable long-term operation, and sufficient heat dissipation are necessary requirements.
