Power ModulesFAQWhat’s the difference between ‘isolated’ and ‘non-isolated’?‘Isolated’ refers to a circuit separated from the AC line in order to prevent electric shock. A ‘non-isolated’ circuit is one not shielded from the AC power source, making electrocution possible. Applications requiring isolation circuitry include TVs and A/V sets. ROHM offers a lineup of power modules (i.e. BP5710-1, BP5716, BP5729) optimized for isolated equipment. A number of consumer devics – mainly appliances – typically are not isolated, ranging from washing machines and hot pots to rice cookers and air cleaners. Is the BP5034D12 power module isolated?Since the primary side connects to the AC line, the BP5034D12 is considered to be non-isolated. Have any of the products been used in 24hr continuous power (always ON) applications?Yes, our power modules are used in a number of continuous power applications, such as air cleaners, refrigerators, and gas detection systems. Can the NC pins of the P5034D12 be connected without causing problems?Since the NC pins are open circuit (not connected), no problems should occur. However, please take into account creepage (distance). What type of operation does the BP5037B12 perform? The BP5037B12 is a chopper-type system utilizing an external coil. Please refer to the information below.
What will happen if the voltage input to the BP5034D12 falls below 80VAC?The output voltage will decrease. Will the BP5034D12 be damaged if 282VDC (200VAC) is supplied? Not likely, since the surface temperature of the BP5034D12 will be 86ºC at a load current of 0.1A. However, the peripheral (circuit) conditions have a large effect on whether a component fails or not. Therefore, the characteristics should be evaluated under actual operating conditions. What type of protection circuit is built into the BP5034D12?Overcurrent protection. Are any of the products UL-rated?No ROHM power supplies are UL-rated. However, the board and resin mold used in the power supplies are UL certified, and all power modules should pass UL testing if submitted by the customer. (Customers who have obtained UL certification using ROHM products exist) What is the flame retardant rating of the external resin?UL94 V-0 What is the isolation voltage of the resin?20kV/mm+ Has 100% voltage resistance testing been conducted on the BP5710-1?Yes, testing has been performed on the both the primary and secondary stages. This applies not only to the BP5710-1, but to all isolated types. What is the structure (construction) of the power module(s)?Please refer to the block diagram of the BP5033-12 below.
What type of fuse is recommended?Daito Communications’ BD10 400VDC/1A fuse is recommended. Please contact the manufacturer for more information. What should the rated voltage of the external fuse be for the BP5037B12?170V and greater A 5A fuse is connected at the end of the 100VAC line. Is another fuse necessary?Yes. Can a jumper chip (e.g. MCR10-0Ω) be used instead of a fuse? No. Why is a fast-blow fuse required? In order to prevent possible combustion in the event of component failure. Can ringing sounds be heard if the coil is incorrectly oriented? The coil direction will affect the switching frequency, which can reach audible levels, resulting in ringing sounds. What is the cause/mechanism of oscillation frequency change based on coil orientation? The system utilizes a ‘self-excitation’ method, whereby the coil generates magnetic flux, which can affect the drive circuit, resulting in a change in the oscillation frequency. The recommended range for the input smoothing capacitor when using the BP5034D5 is 3.3µF to 22µF. Will problems occur if a 33µF capacitor is used? No. What will happen if the capacitance of the input smoothing capacitor is small? If the output current is small no problems should occur. However, the permissible ripple current margin should be verified. Can a 16V capacitor be used, even though the recommended voltage resistance for the output voltage capacitor is 25V?The output voltage capacitor will affect the output ripple voltage. Typically, the lower the voltage resistance the greater the ESR and larger the output ripple voltage. Please verify the performance under actual operating conditions. Please note that the permissible ripple current will also decrease. Therefore, this characteristic should also be confirmed in the actual set. Is operation from -30ºC ensured? No. Please provide the open/short testing results between the product and terminals. No combustion will occur during open/short conditions. What are the transformer characteristics for the BP5718A12?The transformer is a custom model (SRW25ES-X48V015) from TDK. Please contact the manufacturer for inquiries relating to mass production. What are the transformer characteristics for the BP5722A12?The transformer is a TDK Y05103-3 unit. Since it is a custom product, the manufacturer should be contacted for further inquiries. |
