NewsNews of 2009The Industry's Thinnest LED Base Lighting Device02.27.2009
ROHM Co., Ltd. has announced the development of the R-CK001, the industry's thinnest ceiling-mounted seamless LED base lighting unit. Significantly improved energy savings combined with a seamless, socket-less configuration, result in the ideal base lighting solution (lighting that illuminates an entire space). The R-CK001 incorporates multiple mid-power ROHM LEDs and utilizes a unique optical design enabling natural bright light with uniform diffusion and no unevenness. The power source circuit was minimized resulting in an overall height of only 38mm – the thinnest on the market. Advanced proprietary semiconductor technology ensures a conversion efficiency of 85% and stable current flow, impervious to adverse effects from commercial power source voltage variations or local temperature fluctuations. Only 24W is required for operation (including the power supply circuit), representing a 52% decrease in power consumption over conventional 40W fluorescent lights while providing 1.3 times greater illumination (measured 1m directly below). Lifetime is also greater, by up to 3 times (40,000 hours), making them much more environmentally friendly. Sample units were installed in a 24-hour convenience store (Save On, Honjō Hirukawa, Saitama Prefecture) in order to promote the advantages and showcase the viability of LED lighting fixtures for everyday commercial use. The R-CK001 was also noted for its quality and design by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment as part of its ‘Energy Saving Lighting Design Model Project’ (see below for more information).

Regarding the Ministry of the Environment’s ‘Energy Saving Lighting Design Model Project’
As a countermeasure to global warming in October 2008 the Ministry of the Environment began urging businesses, such as commercial facilities and stores, to take the initiative in introducing energy-saving lighting. Shortly afterward the Model Business Inspection Committee was established and publicized the top 12 companies in the nation at a symposium on energy-saving lighting held on January 27, 2009. The R-CK001 was developed as a joint venture between ROHM, Sav On (in Honjō Hirukawa, Saitama Prefecture), and Kenos Spatial Design, Inc., based on designs from Kenos. The goal was to create an energy-saving LED lighting device that was aesthetically pleasing, thin and durable enough for long-term, continuous use in commercial environments. |
