The Industry's Brightest Ultra-compact Chip Reflector LEDs

ROHM has developed the SML-M1 and SML-T1 series chip LEDs with reflectors that feature 1.5 times the brightness of similarly sized conventional molded products (i.e. 100mcd with SML-D12D8W vs. 160mcd with SML-T12D8T, emission color: orange at IF=20mA).

Integrating reflectors in compact conventional chip LEDs has traditionally been very difficult due to problems associated with the pitch offset when joining the reflector. Original high precision manufacturing equipment built-in house has enabled the pitch offset to be minimized, making it possible to produce ultra-compact chip LEDs with reflectors. Proprietary device production wavelength-limiting technology combined with color blending technology cultivated during development of high color-rendering white LEDs, make it possible to reproduce colors never before seen from LEDs (i.e. blue lagoon, ice blue, pink).

A wide range of applications are possible due to the compact size (1.6x0.8x0.55mm and 2.0x1.25x0.55mm), including car audio and instrument systems, where high brightness and customization are in demand, as well as mobile devices and illumination lighting in consumer electronics.

Sample shipments started in October 2007 (sample price: 2.3 US$/unit), with mass production scheduled December 2007.
