BH76706GU and BH769□□GU series ultra-compact video drivers eliminate the need for output capacitors
10.21.2005
ROHM has developed the BH76706GU and BH769□□GU series video driver LSIs that realized micro-miniaturization with the WL-CSP (Wafer Level Chip Size Package) package type.
Sample shipments will begin in November 2005 at a price of 100 yen per unit, with mass production (500,000 units/month initially) to be implemented in March 2006 at ROHM APOLLO DEVICE CO., LTD. (front-end processing) and ROHM FUKUOKA CO., LTD. (back-end processing).
The recent trend of the increasingly sophisticated digital still cameras and mobile phones evokes the demand for the less power consuming devices.
The BH76706 and BH769□□GU series video driver IC which ROHM has developed made external large capacitance output capacitors - indispensable with traditional video drivers - unnecessary by incorporating a charge pump circuit within the LSIs. The units also realized ultra-small size packages, employing the WL-CSP (Wafer Level Chip Size Package) package type, whose size is almost equivalent to the chip. Moreover, the drivers feature low voltage operation, power-saving functions, and even more, making them ideally suited for use in portable devices.

· Glossary
- Charge Pump Circuit
This is a circuit that generates negative voltage inside the IC from a positive voltage power supply and
runs the ICs internal circuits using both positive and negative power supplies. Driving the IC on
positive and negative power supplies eliminates the need for an output capacitor, which is normally
required with conventional ICs that use a single power supply.
- Eighth-Order LPF (Low Pass Filter)
An LPF is used to remove unwanted noise that remains in the output of the DAC (D/A Converter) that converts the digital image data into analog for use in video devices such as TVs. One index that is often used to indicate the capacity of the LPF to remove the noise component is the order system. ROHM ICs feature eighth order noise removal capability × significantly greater than the fourth- to sixth-order configurations typically found in conventional products × resulting in clearer images.
- Amp Gain
The type of DAC used in digital still cameras and cell phones can vary greatly, along with the output signal size. The video driver receives the signal from the DAC and outputs it in a format appropriate for TV. ROHM offers a lineup of video signal amplifiers in four different gain settings, from 6dB (double) to 16.5dB (approximately 6.7×), making them compatible with a variety of DAC configurations.
- Output Terminal Shunt Swith
The output from a normal video driver uses a video signal output terminal located in a digital still
camera or cell phone to connect to a TV. Some types of cell phones also have a recording function that
reads in external video signals. In order to minimize the number of terminals, the video output
terminal used during playback is typically utilized as the video input terminal when recording. The
BH76706GU enables such functionality, featuring a built-in output terminal shunt switch that allows
the video output terminal to be used for video input as well.
