ROHM Semiconductor starts the promotion of the MK5207 Chipset, capable of providing all functions for controlling, monitoring and protecting systems using multiple-cell series-connected lithium-ion battery packs.
This chip set consists of the two ICs: ML5207 (Analog front end IC) and ML5227 (Controller IC). By using this chipset, it will become possible to construct a battery pack protection system with functions such as cell-balancing during charging, over-charge/over-discharge detection, and short circuit detection. It is possible to store the parameters needed for these functions in the built-in flash memory, making it adaptable for various systems according to customers’ needs. As the control program code for this chip set is stored in the integrated memory, no external memory is required.
Target applications for this chipset are electric bicycles, electric power tools, uninterruptable power supply systems and solar photovoltaic systems using Li-Ion batteries.
Some of the key features are:
* Compatible with multi-cell series-connected
battery packs (5 to 13 cells per IC)
* Highly accurate over-charge/over-discharge
voltage detection for each cell
* Short circuit detection
* Creates a bypass route for each cell,
and realizes a highly accurate
cell-balancing function during charging
* Low power consumption
(typ. 232 µA under normal operation)
