Force sensor operation principles

  1. The capacitance generated between the carbon electrode on the silicon rubber and the electrode on the PCB substrate is detected. (Applying force deforms the rubber, increasing the capacitance.)
  2. The capacitance displacement is detected as a voltage change.
  3. The voltage is converted by the ADC, which prevents malfunctions caused by sensor offset or noise/chattering.
  4. The angle based on the balance between OUT1 and OUT2 as well as the intensity is output.
    [If the angle is θ, then tan θ = OUT2/OUT1 (OUT1: X axis, OUT2: Y axis)]

ROHM’s force sensor IC is a specialized LSI that integrates a host of functions, including capacitance/voltage conversion and data processing circuits, into a single chip, making it easy to configure input devices without placing a load on the CPU.
  • The sensing circuit incorporates a high stability CV conversion block
  • Optimized data output reduces the software load on the host
  • Compatible with two serial interfaces: SPI and I2C
  • The built-in reset circuit and clock circuits eliminate the need for an external supply
